Message from the Principal
As we end another half term, the first public examinations draw even closer. For Year 11 and Post16 students the first examinations begin in less than 60 school days (12 weeks)!

When we return after the well-deserved half term break, Year 11 students will begin their Pre Public Examinations (PPE). We expect that the students will once again apply the necessary effort into preparing thoroughly for the assessment, as they will provide an accurate indicator of their ability to tackle the range of questions that are likely to come up in the final public examinations. Once the PPE’s have been marked, we will be providing detailed feedback on what questions were answered securely and those that have not yet been mastered. Feedback will be on a question level analysis with the students. We are committed to sharing remedies and progress at the Year 11 subject evening on 20th March.

Finally, this week the Year 8 and Year 9 students have been engaged with local businesses, finding out more about job roles and learning valuable employability skills that they will need when they reach this stage of their life.

For Year 8 "Brief in a Day" gave the students a taste of what it is like to work in a creative role, by working on a live brief set by a big brand. The students worked in teams to form mini ad agencies and were asked to come up with creative campaign ideas. At the end of the day they pitched their ideas and each team fed back their creative concepts. The students learnt about the creative process, as well as improving their skills in teamwork, communicating and presenting. The students were also asked about their well-being, diet, exercise and sleep patterns.

The year 9 students worked in teams to guess the job role of the visitors. They also had the opportunity to network with them at the end, to talk about what particular skills they need for that role.

I wish to thank Mrs Ayre and Peterborough Skills Service for delivering the Year 8 and 9 events, alongside ten business people from Peterborough. These experiences are part of an ongoing enrichment programme of careers and independent advice, which I am so pleased we have forged through a rich partnership with local businesses.

Best wishes

Surprise donation from Amazon, Peterborough
Last week we were joined by representatives from the Peterborough Amazon distribution centre following a generous donation made to the school. We were lucky enough to receive a cash donation used to purchase a class set of Amazon Kindles. These are being used within literacy lessons in Year 7 and 8 and are a real hit with the students!

The PR team from Amazon came in to see these devices in action and took part in reading with the nurture group. Students were more than happy to tell the visitors about the books they had been reading in class and their experiences with the Kindles so far.

This support and resources will go a long way to helping our pupils with their reading skills, fuelling their love for reading and we would like to thank everyone at Amazon for their generosity.

Maths Revision
With half term next week and the final PPEs straight after half term, time is going very quickly.

Every week I will be sending out resources that students can start using at home called the final countdown. This may seem premature but there are only 56 teaching days to the first maths exam on the 24th of May and revising gradually is much more effective. Using the countdown alongside Hegarty and other revision resources will really make the difference to closing the gap on areas students still have issues with. Please find attached week six of the extra questions students can do at home with the support of parents as mark schemes and examiners reports are also attached. I will continue to attach five topics that regularly appear on examinations, there is also a Personal Learning Checklist so students can track what they feel they have mastered and what they need more help on. This can be used alongside Hegarty maths which has video tutorials to help students understand topics.

Revision guides are also available in school at cost price saving you more than 50% on the RRP. There are 3 books at £2.50 each and an answer book for £1. Please see your class teacher or Mr Hussain or Mr Donnelly if you wish to purchase these. Alternatively you could pay on the school parent pay system.

The final PPE exams will be straight after half term, most will have one lesson before the first maths exam on Tuesday morning!

Year 9 Visit to Cambridge University
This week a small group of Year 9 students had the opportunity to visit Cambridge University and the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Whilst at the university they were able to chat to current undergraduates, finding out all about a typical day in the life of a student, they asked lots of questions about degree courses, higher education and work experience. The students were then privileged to get a tour of Trinity College and take their lunch in the spectacular dining hall, with many saying it felt like they were in Hogwarts dining room! The day was finished off with a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum, where students explored exhibitions including the extensive collections of armoury and weaponry.

Final

Two year 11 boys (Josh and Jay) vs. two year 10 boys (Ryley and Jaydon). It was a very interesting game in which both teams will be looking at the video replays of the number of chances they missed. It was intense and tiring as you would expect and neither team pulled away. At times only 2 points separated the teams. Some poor defending and disagreement with referee decisions led to poor focus. However the two year 11 boys managed to pull away and get match point on 20-15 with Josh Tooke getting the glory basket with a three pointer. Well done!
