This week I met with a large number of students to award them with Principal’s Commendations for their hard work and efforts over the course of this half-term.

Please encourage students in examination groups to attend as many revision sessions as possible.  The schedule is on our school website.

Our new Helping Hands’ service provides support to Families identified within the Troubled Families agenda (which in Peterborough is known as Connecting Families) through a variety of time limited and outcome focussed interventions including whole family support, advocacy with adult services as well as schools, activities promoting well-being for children and young people, as well as whole family activities to strengthen parent child relationships. 

Volunteers will be trained, supported and supervised to deliver a range of support.

You will be highly self-motivating, have good interpersonal skills and the willingness to communicate creatively and effectively with families with children age 0-19 years of age. We are looking for a commitment of 6 months with the capacity to volunteer for at least 4-6 hours per week.

Role Description: 

These are flexible posts which will be adapted to the interests, experience and skills of the post holder. Likely tasks may include:

• Supporting families within the home around routines.
• Supporting families to engage in local activities.
• Supporting with meetings and appointment.
• Accompanying staff on home visits.
• Supporting work within school settings.
• Providing Admin Support As Necessary.

Person Specification

• An interest in or experience of working with families to promote their personal development, self-esteem and resilience.
• An interest in or experience of working with families to support positive outcomes for children and young people.
• An interest in or experience of group work skills engaging with hard to reach families.
• An understanding of good enough parenting and knowledge of risk factors to children and adults with emotional, physical/mental health/substance misuse issues.
• An awareness of the impact of disadvantage and social exclusion and a commitment to promote inclusion and equality of opportunity for all.
• A commitment of at least 6 months volunteering commitment and the capacity to volunteer 4-6 hours per week
• Able to evidence Family Action’s values at all times, which underpin Family Action’s mission of 'building stranger families' by:
  • Being people focused.
  • Reflecting a ‘can do’ approach.
  • Striving for excellence in everything we do.
  • Having mutual respect for everyone we work with, work for and support through our services.

TERMS OF THE VOLUNTEERING POSITION:

• This position fits within the exception for charities under the National Minimum Wage Act and therefore carries no salary or other financial remuneration.
• Reasonable travel expenses will be paid as well as lunch expenses of up to £4 a day (receipts required).
•  The post will initially be based at our office in Hampton Children and Family Centre.
• The usual hours for this post are between 10am and 5pm with an hour for lunch. However, hours can be negotiated, within normal office hours to suit the post holder.
• This position is offered on a flexible basis but the usual minimum commitment would be a minimum of 4-6 hours per week for at least six months.
• Regular supervision and feedback will be given.

The Theory of Evolution

The theory of evolution states that every organism (be it plant, animal or single celled organism) to ever have lived on Earth descended from a single common ancestor. In order to create all of the different animals and plants on Earth nowadays, this single ancestor would have had to physically change (evolve) through the generations of its offspring.

 Evolution is not something that happens quickly in order to produce a new species of organism, it involves ‘natural selection’, a theory popularised by Charles Darwin. Natural selection is when the offspring of an organism has a genetic mutation which might give it a different physical or behavioural trait. In the rare case that this trait is beneficial to the survival of the organism, it will survive longer and be able to reproduce to create successful offspring of its own. This can happen many times over a very long period of time until the mutated organism has produced many mutated generations. When they have changed so much in comparison to the original organism, they are classed as a different species. 

The creation of this new species may go on to produce mutated offspring which may evolve into a completely different species, hence the huge number of different types of organisms on Earth.
