Message from the Principal

What a fantastic half term it has been!

At the end of our first half term, I wish to both look back but also look forward to the next half term and beyond.

  • The official rollout of the new uniform has been embraced by students superbly well.
  • The welcoming and settling in of our new year 7 students.
  • The embracement of tighter rules so that we all succeed.
  • The numerous visits and events that have taken place already to enrich the learning of your child.  These have included:
    • The Crops event in school for year 7 on humanity
    • Forrest school weekly events
    • Cadbury World trips
    • Thorpe Park Visit
    • Geography Field trips (Years 9 +11)
    • Post16 Science field trip
    • Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise money for cancer research
    • The year 9 History workshop
    • The after school PE and extracurricular clubs
  • The first curriculum day has allowed students to culturally enrich themselves as well as integrate into the school life and learn outside the realms of subject specialisms.
  • The pride in the 230 students involved in the Prospective Parents Evening indicated to everyone what a rich talent of student we have to nurture and grow inside our school and the journey of self-improvement is never ending.

Looking ahead:

We have  a number of key events planned for straight after half term. We strongly encourage you to attend where relevant to your child:

  • Year 7 Tutor Evening on Tuesday 29 Oct, 4-7pm
  • Post 16 Opportunities Evening on Tuesday 5 November, starting at 6pm
  • Year 12/13 Progress Evening on Wednesday 13 November, 4-7pm
  • Year 11 Pre Public examinations (PPEs) will commence from week beginning 11 Nov for 2 weeks
  • Post16 Pre Public examinations (PPEs) will commence from week beginning 25 Nov for 2 weeks

And finally…

I wish to thank those parents or carers that have taken time to respond to our satisfaction survey.  Feedback, whether positive or otherwise is helpful.  Please watch out for the outcomes of this survey as I promise we will act and further strengthen the school based on the feedback received.  Given the amazing response rate, details of the survey and actions will appear next term.

May I wish our students a safe and happy half term (Monday 21 October to Friday 25 October).  The school is open as normal on Monday 28 October.

Best wishes

Rugby
What progress these boys have made in 2 weeks! Last week beating the sides they drew and lost to previously, Stanground 4-0 and Hampton College 2-1.

The boys started rucking in this tournament which they have all picked up very well. In the final game against Kings the boys narrowly lost to a far more experienced team but stuck at it right until the end. Star performers were Matas and Hanif with some great marauding runs and tackles.

Science News
We are pleased to be able to offer Y10 and Y11 students the opportunity to buy revision guides for all Science courses.

These are bespoke to the Edexcel courses that we run and are available at a considerably discounted rate. Letters will given to Y10 and Y11 students in lessons, some will have already been given to parents during the Y11 subject evening. Please ensure both payment and return slip are received before the stated deadline.

In addition to revision guides and the intervention sessions in school time, we are also running after school revision sessions from 3:30-4:15pm, every Monday, starting after half term. Year 11 A half are expected to attend in week 1 and B half in week 2, alternating with English. Year 10 are invited to attend every week. Details will be displayed around the school, but please could students and parents do their best to ensure attendance. Every opportunity to learn makes a huge difference to the final grade.

We hope you enjoy your half term break and return to us refreshed and prepared for your November PPEs!

Year 8 Football
On Monday evening I took the year 8 footballers over to Arthur Mellows for their second game of the season. There were a few changes to the starting line up from last weeks game at Sir Harry Smith that saw Finley Eze back into the starting line-up after illness.

The game started in torrential rain with both teams struggling to get possession of the ball on the greasy surface. There were a few half chances for each team in the opening exchanges but nothing of any real note. Then the game broke into life on the 15-minute mark when a ball played through to the Arthur Mellows centre forward, which saw him clean through and bearing down on our goal. Alfie Mediros slid in with a last-ditch tackle only to see the ball go into the back of our net, but there was relief as the off-side flag was up.This then encouraged the team to get hold of the ball and with assistance from Logan Carter, Finley Eze scored from close range. The boys managed to hang on to the lead until half time.
After some tactical changes and management advice the home team were on the front foot in the second half, creating some good goal scoring opportunities that saw them hit the post and a good save from stand in keeper Jayden Stacey. From the resulting corner we failed to clear the cross and the Arthur Mellow centre forward smashed the cross bar from close range, the warning signs were there. Then on the 10-minute mark the home team had their reward pulling a goal back from some sloppy defending in the Ken Stimpson defence. The home team kept on pushing forwards to find the winning goal, but it did not come. There was a good move put together down the Ken Stimpson left, that saw Logan Carter pull the ball back for that man again Finley Eze to convert from close range to give us a 2-1 lead. The home team came right back at us creating chances and then in the final 2 minutes they managed to convert one of those chances from some indecision from the Ken Stimpson goal keeper. The game then finished 2-2 which overall was a fair result.

I would like to thank the boys for all their hard work and commitment in poor weather on Monday.

Man of the Match – Logan Carter

Year 9 Football
Tuesday 15 October saw our year 9 boys head over to AMVC for their first football fixture of the year.

The boys showed a fantastic attitude and team ethic from the moment they stepped onto the bus, they listened, discussed tactics, and expressed a real desire to win the game. On arrival at AMVC the boys had a great warm up, we looked at our shape and the positioning of the boys, as well as both defensive and offensive tactics.

So the game kicks off... we start strongly, battling extremely well and continuously winning the ball back from high up the pitch and creating chances. A wonderful substitution saw David Ratley open the scoring, created by a perfectly weighted pass from Colbey Ring. Taylor Knight had an outstanding first half, making save after save and although we had a commanding first half, AMVC went on to level the scoring, making it 1-1 at half time.

So the team talk... positive, confident, energetic, proud and pleasing.

Into the second half we start excellently well, creating two or three clear chances but unfortunately not capitalising. However, a few minutes later after a wonderful corner kick in, comes Colbey Ring with a Salmon like jump and powerful header, planting the ball in the back of the net making it 2-1 to the mighty KSCS FC. Although taking the lead again, we were pegged back once more after AMVC score via the head of their striker. Yet we show patience and resilience as the boys defended fantastically and passed the ball around well, before Oliver Chapman was set free to use some spectacular dribbling skills to bypass the AMVC defence and slot the ball home past the on rushing AMVC goalkeeper, making it 3-2 to KSCS.
With roughly five minutes left of play and KSCS still leading 3-2, AMVC levelled the game once again with an superb strike, making it 3-3. Chances for KSCS came and went, but it was all down to a golden chance for Ameer Hamza who was set free one on one with the AMVC goalkeeper. He takes the keeper on, the defender gets back, "SHOOOOT" the boys cry, "AMEER SHOOOOT". Ameer takes on both recovering defenders, and then takes on the goalkeeper again, STILL NOT SHOOTING.... finally he shoots.... NO IT'S BLOCKED and cleared. The final whistle goes.

Gutted, after a massive performance from the boys and leading three times in the game, passing and moving, as well as defending and attacking fantastically well, we finish 3-3.

Man of the Match - Taylor Knight

Onto the next game, in search of a win.

Whats been going on in the food department?
Aromas have wafted down the corridor as the students have been busy cooking a range of dishes in the kitchen this term.

Key Stage 3 students have made cheese scones, jam buns, apple crumble and shortbread. Year 9 have been busy trialing recipes for their pop up restaurant in December, each group having chosen a different cuisine- Italian, Chinese, Greek, Mexican and Indian. Year 10 have been improving their practical skills in a range of dishes- bolognaise, quiche, chelsea buns and risotto. I am so proud of all the dishes the students have produced and look forward to more cooking next term.

Year 7
What a fabulous half term year 7 have had, they have all settled in extremely well. The manners and respect they show to all is outstanding.

Wednesday saw our rewards assembly for year 7 with 'Student of the Week' and a fabulous well done to all.
Miss McLean's form is in 1st place at this time, but it's all still to play for next half term with only a few points between 1st and 2nd place. Next term sees the start of debates, rewards afternoon and much more.

I hope you all have a lovely half term.

End of First Half Term Well-being Update
It's hard to believe we have already completed the first half term of the new school year.

We welcomed back our committed team of Ambassadors and introduced our team to Year 7 through an assembly.
On World Mental Health Day, Thursday 10 October, we once again held a very successful 'Time To Talk' event for staff, which was very well received.
We promoted the services that KSCS offer, at our Open Evening and one of our ambassadors, Shannon, did a wonderful job showing prospective new students and their carers our worry box and board, explaining how it works. We are pleased that a number of students have already used this facility.
We continue to promote our services through our social media pages and we are excited about the second half term when we will be planning our Christmas fundraising stall.
Mrs. Blackledge has welcomed new members to the crafting club and learning to crochet is again proving popular.

We have successfully recruited a number of Year 12 students who will deliver the Peer Education Project to Year 7 during PSHE lessons. We're sure they're feeling quite nervous but it's going to be a valuable experience for them. It will help them to develop personal and employability skills, as well as help our young people better understand Mental Health and pick up some useful strategies which can help them cope with the natural ups and downs of life. Research has shown that these young people respond well to Post 16 as it is not that long ago that they were Year 7 and have a natural understanding of the pressures and challenges they face.
Together with promoting our services and activities through social media, we are also in the process of improving the way you can access well-being information through our school website, so please keep checking for updates.
We wish all our staff and students a happy half term break.

On Wednesday 16 October KSCS students and staff went to see Grease The Musical at The Key Theatre.

It was a TAG Theatre Production, where we saw a hugely talented cast from the Peterborough area bringing high energy, fun, romance, singing and dancing to the stage.

It was wonderful to watch our fellow student Holly Honeyman as Rizzo and Ella Andrews, Savannah Kamran and Amy Noble as ensemble cast members. Such a fantastic performance, well done!!!

Choir impress at John Lewis
Anyone who has been into John Lewis recently will be aware of the major redesign and upgrade the store have been undertaking.

This upgrade is a major event for both the store in Queensgate and also Peterborough in general as John Lewis is an iconic part of the City Centre.

The school choir have had a long relationship with the Peterborough store and we were honoured to be invited to perform as the first part of this upgrade was opened to the public. Press and John Lewis Managers were present as 14 members of the choir sang. Following the performance we received comments such as “You made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck” and “Are you really a School Choir?”, another huge success for us.

We will be returning to John Lewis in December for our traditional Christmas Carols but would like to thank them for all their support.

Careers
Once again it has been a very busy start to the term supporting students with opportunities to inspire their futures.

Year 8 students have been taking part in the Metro Bank Finance workshops.

Year 10 have been involved in a Business Network Event where local businesses shared their interview process and potential career options with students. Visitors included The NHS, Morgan Sindall, Adkins, BGL and The RAF. Many thanks to these businesses for volunteering their time to support our young people.  Year 10 students have also taken part in the RAF PDT Challenge.

Year 11 students have received one to one meetings with an external Careers Adviser and these will be followed through with meetings with myself.

All Post 16 students visited a university, either Nottingham or Lincoln, where they took park in various workshops delivered by student ambassadors and had experience of a lecture.  Year 12 students have also started their "Your Future" programme which is timetabled and will support students through all aspects of independence and guidance in making informed decisions about their future, either at University or within the world of work, they will also be researching work experience opportunities ready for the summer term.

If you have a student in Year 8 they will be taking part in Career Investigator after half term. This is an online programme which guides students into making decisions about their future. A report will be produced and emailed to the students, please do discuss these at home as in January we will be holding group sessions to talk about reports and giving students the opportunity of researching together. Some students in Year 7 will also be visiting RSA in Lynchwood, students will be interviewing staff there and taking part in an employability challenge.

Once again I wish to thank all our volunteers in supporting our young people this half term.
