Message from the Principal
It only feels like last week when I welcomed you all back!

Next week is our final half term week.  I urge parents of year 11 students to book  appointments with their child’s subject teachers using the following address - https://kscs.parentseveningsystem.co.uk/.

The evening will aim to discuss progress over the last year, as well as targets moving forward.  Whilst we have another meeting in May, I urge you to take the time to meet with staff and learn how your child can close the gap in terms of meeting or improving on their targets.

Thank you to all the parents of year 7 students that attended the Tutor evening. I trust this evening was informative and where possible, an opportunity to meet your child’s Tutor in order to build a strong relationship.

We said adios this week to our Spanish students who have forged strong links and friendships with our students over the last three weeks. Finally, I have been engaging with a lot of our students from the Student Council, Student Well-being group and individual students that want to share their views in a holistically positive way.  I am amazed when I speak to them how much truth and commitment there is about making the school even better. The future is very bright with such a positive stance.

New staff

Welcome to Mr Mullarkey – Humanities teacher

I am thrilled to be embarking on an exciting journey teaching Humanities at Ken Stimpson Community School. The warm welcome I have already received is heartening and reflects the positive community spirit of the staff and students here. I have always found that the subject of Humanities can inspire and broaden students' aspirations to gain a valuable sense of place and cultural identity. I am looking forward to further engaging students at Ken Stimpson, and seeing them strive towards their potential.   As a Yorkshire man and active father of two young children, I enjoy running and cycling as a means to developing my own sense of place, as I discover the surrounding areas.

Welcome to Mr Hussain – Mathematics teacher

My name is Shamir Hussain and I have come back to KSCS after training here a couple of years ago within the Maths department. One of the main reasons I decided to come back was that I did miss the team who are very supportive and an amazing group of teachers. I believe and feel that I have come back as a stronger and more rounded teacher due to experiences elsewhere and am glad that I was able to experience these different settings and see things being done in other ways. I like playing many different sports, so I feel that we are really lucky to have the opportunity to do so many social activities together as a faculty and a school and this does make it an enjoyable workplace to be in.
I am looking forward to challenging yet exciting times here at KSCS!

Best wishes

Wellbeing at KSCS
Our theme in assembly this week has been Wellbeing and Mental Health Awareness.

World Mental Health Day is on Wednesday 10th October and this year, one of the messages is ‘Take One Hour For Yourself’ to do something which helps you feel good; for example, Running, Cycling, Yoga, Reading, Playing Sport, Baking. We will be running an Introduction to Mindfulness class during both break times on the day in Mrs. Purdy’s dance studio.

We are putting together a Wellbeing Student Council and are pleased to have received several applications from enthusiastic students, more news to follow.

Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to our Wellbeing Ambassadors for helping deliver the assemblies. It is not easy to stand up in front of hundreds of people but they did a fantastic job. They are Hollie Orbell, Bethan Smith, Esther Goodhand, Sara Indulska, Stuart Booth and Roxanna Tansley.

Free support for English revision
Following the upcoming half term break, Year 11 students will complete two mock exams for English Language to help them understand how to improve as the year progresses. These are national mock exams that will give us detailed information about each student to help them understand specific questions they need to work on to improve their summer exam grade.

We will also be provided with key resources to use with students by the company that assess the national data from these exams. It is very important that students aim to achieve their full potential in these exams in order to give their teachers a good indication of how to best support each individual student.

In preparation for this, there is a detailed and free revision guide for English Language that will take students through every question and give them guidance on getting top marks for both papers. This revision guide has been uploaded to the Connect system or is available as a hard copy on request should access to Connect be an issue.

There are also revision guides on Connect for two of the English Literature texts studied (An Inspector Calls and Macbeth).

Students have been advised to focus on the revision guide for Language papers up to and including half term, after this they can begin revision of Literature texts.

Please don’t hesitate to email should you have any questions regarding upcoming exams or revision; I would be happy to help and support with any queries or concerns regarding any of the English curriculum.

Attitude to Learning Reports
This academic year we will be trialing Attitude to Learning Reports for students in each year group.

These are a snap shot capture of your child’s attitude towards their studies. This will help to inform both parents/carers and teachers about a student’s readiness to learn and help us to proactively work together in making sure each child achieves their potential in their studies. These reports do not include academic progress or predicted grades.

These reports will be sent home via email each half term and are in addition to the standard end of term reports.  As this is a new process we welcome any feedback on these reports via this link: https://goo.gl/forms/lf6RpGEZqpKpOebQ2

The first set of Attitude to Learning Reports were sent home this week.

Hunstanton Art Trip
On Wednesday this week the Art team took 60 year 10 students to Sandringham Forest and Hunstanton to collect primary source material that will feed into their GCSE and BTEC projects.

We had a fantastic day with our artistic bunch. We even managed to get in some drawing in the forest and painting on the beach. We look forward to seeing how the students progress in their projects now that they have some primary material to work from.

Wednesday 10th October – World Mental Health Day
The theme of the day was to Take Time Out For Yourself and do something which makes you feel good.

It is difficult to find time during our busy lives where we can just stop and be still and quiet for a few minutes so we encouraged students and staff to attend an Introduction to Mindfulness session by Joe Wicks The Body Coach

Mindfulness is about focusing on that moment. With practise it can be a great way to help clear your mind, concentrate on breathing and therefore have a positive impact on your wellbeing. All who participated said they felt much better for it and would like to try it again. We hope to run similar sessions in the future. Thanks to Mrs. Purdy for the use of her dance studio.
