What will I learn?

A Level Sociology offers the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological theories and methodology. It is designed to encourage students to demonstrate the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of sociological themes:

  • Socialisation, culture and identity.
  • Social differentiation, power and stratification.

The specification lays an appropriate foundation for further study of Sociology and related subjects in higher education.

The AS course represents a strong introduction to the A Level course. The skills developed at AS Level also serves as an extremely beneficial way of honing the necessary exam skills.

Assessment:

All units are assessed by external examination consisting of short answer and extended written response questions.

AS Level

  • Paper 1: Education with methods in context [1 hr 30 mins]
  • Paper 2: Research Methods and Topics in Sociology [1 hour 30 mins]

A Level

  • Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods [2 hours]
  • Paper 2: Topics in Sociology [2 hours]
  • Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods [2 hours]
What can I do next?

Sociology is an excellent choice of subject for people who want a career in social work, nursing or medicine. Students who take Sociology often also study Psychology, Law, Criminology, English courses and Media Studies. This course is a suitable foundation for the study of Sociology or a related area of Higher Education such as Criminology or Law. Study at A Level prepares students for the essay writing demands of university. However students who wish to pursue a career in any of the care providing services, journalism, law, teaching or a career in marketing or business will find an understanding of Sociology useful.
