Art and Design (Fine Art)

Art and Design (Fine Art)

What will I learn?

This is a broad-based course exploring practical and critical/contextual work through a range of 2D/3D processes and media. It is taught as one extended project during Year 12.

The project starts with a brief or theme, which leads to the study of a different aspect of art, design or culture. You are expected to develop a journal, showing the development of ideas and experimentation with materials, which is taken through to an individual piece of final 2D or 3D work. You will be expected to participate actively in your course of study, recognising and developing your own strengths in the subject and identifying and sustaining your own independent developments.

All students will be encouraged to work and develop skills in a multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary way. The art disciplines that all students will have an opportunity to explore and develop are:

  • painting and drawing
  • printmaking
  • sculpture
  • ceramics
  • fine art textiles
Further course content:

Students must have achieved either a GCSE Art and Design (grade 5 and above) or L2M in BTEC Art and Design. In addition, five other GCSEs graded level 5 or above are expected, although each candidate will be individually assessed. Students will need good time management skills and have regularly attended after school Arts Clubs.

Who Can Do It?

Students must have and show an interest in Fine Art and should be open to challenges and technical problem solving through the use of media and materials. Students should be prepared to work at a steady pace throughout each of the AS and A2 years to ensure they keep up with the flow of coursework. Students should also be prepared to travel to galleries to visit work first hand on trips with the school but also independently.

Assessment:

All Work is assessed using the following Assessment Objectives:

  • A01: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
  • A02: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
  • A03: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress
  • A04: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements
