Remembrance Assembly 2019 – Lest We Forget

On Monday we came together as a school to pay respect to those who have given their lives for the greater cause and for those who serve us in many capacities to keep our nation safe and well. 

This year’s assembly focussed on three aspects:

1. The global nature of World War 1 and 2
2. The hidden heroes of World War 2
3. The significance of the Poppy

As a school, we paid our own respect and educated the students to the sacrifice and consequence of conflict. Our Remembrance Assembly was superbly respected by our students with pupils in their cadet or service uniforms.

Curriculum Day 2 – a huge success!

On Tuesday we engaged in our second Curriculum day.  I was delighted to experience all the activities.  The purpose of these curriculum days is to enrich our students with aspects that are covered on the exam syllabuses but more importantly provide them with a richer experience of being “educated”. These involved:

• Awareness of well-being strategies 
• Team work/ Problem solving/Enterprise 
• Empathy and relationships
• Preparation for Science examinations
• Applied computing through code breaking activities
• Global awareness 
• The dangers of anti-social behaviour and knife crime via the Police
• University and study skills

A wide range of external providers contributed to a rich and diverse day to enable our students to learn beyond the GCE/A level format.

Werrington Sports Fields Fencing Proposals

Public Consultation Event Monday 18 November 3-7pm, Werrington Library

On Monday afternoon, the local authority and Ken Stimpson Community School will be consulting with all stakeholders (Residents, Councillors, Vivacity, organisations representing the Werrington Community and any other interested party) about the proposal to fence off a section of the fields so that these are secure to the school and students during the school day.  

This will take place in Werrington Library from 3 -7pm and we welcome you to attend as parents of the school.  The proposal is to erect fencing which will allows us to have a secure sports facility, but also outside of school hours can allow community groups to use the open spaces that residents closest to the school have enjoyed for many years.
Attached below is the letter sent out and I know this has been pushed out onto many social media sites.  

1. I wish to make it clear the rationale for this is to ensure that we work together to safeguard children attending the school. As the Principal of Ken Stimpson Community School, I have a duty to ensure all safeguarding risks are minimised and the highest safeguarding standards are adhered to.
    
2. We wish to consult and work with the local community as we appreciate this will have an impact in some way to local users of the fields.
    
3. Subject to the consultation process and approval at a future planning committee, the school is not paying for this and scarce resources are having to be found from an already tight fund from Peterborough City Council.  This shows their commitment to this issue.

The event was held at New College Stamford in conjunction with the South Lincolnshire Group Training Association (SLGTA). A wide range of local and regional employers from the construction industry also provided help and support to allow the school pupils to explore a variety of technical, professional and trade career opportunities available to them.

Activities included interior design, surveying, eco building design and techniques, bridge building, mini digger operation and road building. Plus the more traditional trade skills of plumbing, tiling, electrical, carpentry/joinery and brickwork. 
The speed with which the students learnt new skills was impressive. During the 1 hour sessions students had built a wall, tiled a wall, made a bird box and built a bridge.

We have 15 Technicians booked onto this full day course to cover safe practices of microbiology.
This will again be an ideal opportunity to showcase our superb Science department.
Money generated from this course can be re-invested into essential resources for our ongoing practical programme.

For Bonfire night we made our own fire extinguishers and tested them out in the lab, extinguishing the flames on our tealights very effectively! We then made our own sparklers after learning about some of the materials that are used, with excellent results on testing.

This week we investigated whether we could use fruits and vegetables as a source of electricity. Students had to build and test a circuit, powered by lemons, limes or potatoes, to see if these fruits and vegetables could light up a small bulb. We were impressed when all three circuits had a lit bulb and began to wonder whether other fruits & vegetables would also work in a circuit.

They got the chance to attend a lecture about Stalin’s Russia, delivered by Dr Jonathan Davis. This was followed by a session about history in the news, delivered by the Head of History at Anglia Ruskin.

The students also had a chance to tour the campus with one of Anglia Ruskin’s students, giving them valuable insight into university life.
In the afternoon, Dr Sean Lang delivered a session about the use of historical sources. As well as lecturing at Anglia Ruskin, he is also on the managing committee of the Churchill Archive and was able to use material from the archive with the students. Dr Lang is also the author of one of the books that some of the students are using for their coursework, so it was nice to put a face to the author!

The day gave an interesting insight into studying history at university.
