Learning Centre

At Ken Stimpson Community School we are determined to meet the educational needs of all our students. The school follows the fundamental principles that:

  • A student with special needs should have their needs met as far as possible.
  • These special needs will be met usually in school.
  • The view of the student will be sought and taken into account.
  • The parents have a vital role to play in supporting their child's education.
  • Students with special needs are offered full access to a broad, balanced and relevant education.

The Learning Centre caters for the needs of all students with special needs both with and without statements. The Learning Centre works with:

  • Able and gifted students.
  • Students with linguistic diversity.
  • Students with ethnic and cultural diversity.
  • Students with specific learning needs.
  • Students with both long and short term learning difficulties.
  • Students with short term emotional and behavioural difficulties.

All teachers plan, teach, assess and evaluate work to take account of the wide range of abilities, aptitudes and interests of all students. The school follows the New Code of Practice. The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator is responsible for overseeing the assessment and the provision for these students.

The Learning Centre has a full staff including teaching and administrative assistants. Students with special educational needs are encouraged to become increasingly independent and to take responsibility within the school. The Learning Centre provides assistance for students within the classroom, advice for staff on appropriate materials and strategies to use and withdrawal of individuals or small groups for specific activities.

The Learning Centre has purpose built facilities in the centre of the school, which are available throughout the day, and offers individually tailored support to those who need it.

The Learning Centre values working in partnership with all parents. The Centre involves parents/carers in all decisions about their children. The views of parents/carers are sought at all stages of assessment and provision. We take the views of parents/carers extremely seriously, as we believe that together parents/carers and teachers can build a far more complete picture of a student and his/her needs than can be done separately. Working together more than doubles the effect of working individually.
