Message from the Principal
We welcomed over 400 families to our Prospective Parents Evening on Tuesday evening. I mention this because your son or daughter may have volunteered to give up their time to promote the school. Nearly 100 students volunteered on the evening. The parents visiting the school overwhelmingly fed back that our students conveyed their passion and enthusiasm for what we do every day.

If you child was involved in the evening, then may I extend my sincere gratitude for the time that they willingly gave up. I also wish to share that the members of staff and myself were so proud of their confidence and belief in the school.  They were real stars!  Later I will share how we wish to convey our gratitude to the students and yourself, as I am so proud of their contribution.

Being good citizens and giving back to society is a core theme of our school. On Friday last week, we held a McMillan Charity Morning.  Staff were superbly waited on by a number of Year 7 students who also showed their business and enterprise skills.  We raised £168.00. Thank you to:

  • Amy
  • Holly
  • Abigail
  • Taylen
  • Riley
  • Rafael
  • Mrs Ayre
  • Mrs Surman
  • Mrs Ingram

I also wish to thank the Art faculty for putting on the KS3 Art Display on Monday evening.  Having visited the exhibition, I was very impressed with the quality of artwork on display.

As the first half term draws in to the last fortnight, we have a number of key events that you may wish to note:

The first of our Personal and Social Education curriculum days will be held on Thursday 13 October.  This will involve the whole school engaging in a range of age appropriate activities and tasks to support personal and social development.  The focus for each year group yell be different:

  • Year 7            Friendship
  • Year 8            Relationships
  • Year 9            Careers
  • Year 10          Health Education and Relationships
  • Year 11          Personal Well Being
  • Post 16          Transition to advanced level study including study skills
    • Progression beyond school

Throughout the day students will participate in a range of challenges.  Look out in next week’s newsletter for photographic evidence of the day.  After Thursday please ask your young person about their experience of the day.

On Wednesday 19th October KS3 will be participating in inter-house cross country event:

Unit 1-2 will be all year 7

Unit 3-4 will be all year 8

Unit 5-6 will be all year 9

All students in year 7, 8 and 9, regardless whether they have PE or not on that Wednesday, need to bring their indoor kit to participate in running, throwing and jumping. Can anyone stop Success from winning again?!

Best wishes

Burghley House Sculpture Park
Due to popular demand we ran a second Art and Design Burghley Sculpture Park visit this Thursday 6th October.

Students enjoyed a wire workshop where they built colourful wire dragonflies, and a walk around the sculpture park taking in the beautiful range of artwork. We even had time for 2 Art workshops of our own, a simple drawing of a sculpture and the students favourite; Nature Art creation inspired by the famous Artist Andy Goldsworthy. I would like to thank the children for their positivity and great attitudes throughout the day. It was a pleasure to have accompanied you.

New Staff Profile

Mrs Thirsk

I grew up in Leicester with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. At school, I enjoyed music and played the violin and piano.  I was involved in a tour with the Leicestershire schools symphony orchestra to Spain and Paris and was also lucky to be part of a European tour with the European schools string consort.  Our tour ended in Venice where we played concerts in St Marks square.  I still enjoy music and 3 of my siblings chose this as their career.

At school, my favourite teacher was my A Level maths teacher Mr Curwen.  He always made time for me and really helped to build my confidence.  At secondary school, my maths teacher Mr Edwards had a son Chris who now plays in Kasabian as a bass guitarist.

I have taught all over England and also at an international school in Cyprus for a year.

My hobbies include playing badminton and I am also a member of a ladies football team.

KS3 Art exhibition
It was my pleasure to organise our first of many annual Key Stage 3 Art Exhibition on Monday 3rd October.

The Art team were pleased to show round so many friends and families of our talented key stage 3 student body. Well done to all our exhibitors, your work looked fantastic.

Attendance
"Sometimes we're all too quick to count down the days that we forget."

"For the third week Aspire stays in the lead. However all houses had a decrease in attendance. At this time of year the statistics can change a lot from week to week. To help your house attendance all you need to do is to keep coming into school!"
